If Only I Could Talk (The words of my son)

In honor of April’s Autism Awareness Month:

Picture
If only I could talk, I would explain who I am and how I feel.

If only I could talk, I would say I am not what the world labels me; slow, retard, disabled or my favorite, not normal.

If only I could talk, I would tell the people who stare at me with disgust at stores and restaurants that this is how God made me. I am not a bad kid.

If only I could talk, I would tell mommy to stop being so hard on herself. You are not a bad mom. You show me unconditional love. Even when my senses go insane, and blood rushes to my brain and I scream for hours, you hold me and love me. You have never left me alone. Thank you for having autism with me.

If only I could talk, I would say thank you dad for working to provide for this family. Thank you for treating me just like the son you prayed for. Even though I may never play sports, thanks for giving me the opportunity to try. You have never changed your expectation for me even though I have autism. Thank you for pushing me and teaching me not to allow my disability to limit me in life. I love it when you call me your Ace. It makes me smile.

If only I could talk, I would tell everyone that meets me not to be afraid and please don’t make fun of me. I mean no harm when I climb on you and kiss your forehead. It’s my way of saying ‘hi’.

If only I could talk, I would explain how it feels to be autistic. Imagine your skin crawling, being hungry, thirsty or in pain and having no way to communicate it to anyone. At times I feel I have no control over my own body. I’m just watching myself walk around with no purpose. Imagine not being able to tell mommy and daddy you love them. Imagine not being able to sleep or control your senses because your brain doesn’t tell your body you’re tired.

If only I could talk, I would tell the world not to take life for granted; not to overlook the blessings that I would love to have that many never thank God for

Now that I can talk for this one night, allow me to say, Hi, my name is Ayson Shelton. I am 5 years old and I have autism. I am a happy kid but I am nonverbal. But I know God has a plan for me because mommy and daddy told me so. My favorite hobbies are running around, screaming, jumping, drinking juice, listening to music, watching YouTube, hugs and kisses. I love my iPad or any electronics. I love mommy, daddy and my sister. I am not a retard, I understand. I don’t like the stares and whispers about me. I have feelings also. Thanks for being my voice tonight.
